Tutor Responsibilities

  • Be timely.
  • Be prepared.
  • Do not do a student’s homework. This may reinforce a tutor’s knowledge, but it does little to engage the student.
  • Use proper questioning skills.
  • Actively engage the student in the tutoring process so he or she may learn.
  • Act primarily as a facilitator and evaluator of learning rather than just a source of information.
  • Do not take on the role of professor. Tutees are required to go to class so that tutoring may supplement their in-class learning.

Student Responsibilities

  • Attend class.
  • Come to tutoring prepared with questions and concerns to help guide the tutor.
  • Bring all materials to tutoring (i.e. textbook, notes, syllabus, and any other materials related to the course).
  • Actively participate in the tutoring/learning process by showing work, answering questions, or even helping other students understand material that was just covered.
  • Do not expect tutors to provide answers on take-home tests.

Respectful Use of Tutoring Space – Policies and Procedures

  • Staff and students are not to be eating while tutoring, as this is disruptive to others.
Note: Drinks and small snacks are OK (i.e. granola bars, trail mix, etc.).
  • Telephone and texting conversations should be conducted outside of the tutoring areas. Tutoring mainline is for staff usage only.
  • Limit non-tutoring-related conversations so students and staff can stay focused.
  • Students are not allowed to leave materials behind; we cannot be responsible for the absence of materials.
  • Friends are not welcome to “hang out” at tutoring. Only checked-in students may be in the tutoring area.
  • Laptops are for work only.
  • All tutorial services occur on campus in a predesignated assigned location.
  • Students must check in and have their UNLV student IDs swiped prior to the start of every tutoring session.

  • We do not provide placement exam tutoring (GMAT, PCAT, etc.) or graduate course tutoring. Students need to seek private tutors or go see their professors.
