In Somewhere within the Darkness. Walter Dean Myers writes an unsentimental, realistic story from the obstacles that thwart understanding between people, even a couple apparently as near as father and boy. Both Jimmy and Crab go into the relationship warily, but simultaneously having a hope that lies just beneath the top of doubt and suspicion. Jimmy really wants to know his father but simultaneously cannot instantly trust a guy he’s never known. He really wants to achieve to Crab within the older man’s discomfort and want, but he cannot fully have confidence in a guy who states wish to obvious his name from the crime that he’s been charged but who funds his quest through vehicle thievery and charge card fraud.
Both guys have needs, and frequently within the novel individuals needs are selfish. Crab admits he wants Jimmy in the future with him because Crab will need resolution before his dying. Jimmy feels physically ill because he leaves Mama Jean’s sheltering love, but, simultaneously, he must also understand what this means to possess a father and to become a man. The more youthful man and also the older man circle one another for the majority of the novel, until your final confrontation occurs in the dramatic climax from the work once the information closing directly into capture Crab. Crab reaches to Jimmy for acceptance as his father, but Jimmy can’t accept Crab’s envy, his failure like a father, and the false conception of the items this means to become tough inside a hostile world.
