Robert Brooke. Underlife and Writing Instruction.
Brooke, Robert. Underlife and Writing Instruction. CCC 38.2 (1987): 141-153.
Abstract:
Brooke uses the sociological idea of underlife (behaviors that undercut expected roles) to describe how both students and teachers redefine their traditional roles within the writing classroom. From his semester-lengthy study of the newcomer writing class, Brooke observes how students push against teacher expectations and teachers deliberately structure their class differently than the others in the college. Brooke argues that writing instruction functions to disrupt the present educational system and institution, supplying a different type of classrooms instead, one which favors autonomy and action.
