* Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) for the transfer of operations and management of academic activities of the National Institute of Animal Welfare, presently with the MoEFCC, to JNU.

The MoA was signed by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. M. Jagadesh Kumar on behalf of JNU and Mr. Anil Sant, Joint Secretary, on behalf of MoEFCC. The signing ceremony was conducted in the presence of Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani, Hon’ble Minister, Human Resource Development and Shri Prakash Javadekar, Hon’ble Minister, Environment Forest and Climate Change, in the conference hall of the Minister, HRD at Shastri Bhavan.

The MoA will empower JNU to venture into this new area of animal welfare, with six 1-month certification courses and one 6-month diploma course to begin with, to be followed after 1 year with a Master’s level course. Courses based purely on various aspects of animal welfare will be conducted for the first time in the country to recognize animals as sentient beings, capable of experiencing pain and suffering, and to promote their welfare as animal welfare. is an issue of importance, and a part of the social development of nations world wide. JNU with its strong presence in the social sciences is considered the best institution to carry forward this task, to evolve statutory procedures and engage social efforts to promote the basic physical and material well-being of animals.

* The Government of India has appointed Prof. M. Jagadesh Kumar, Vice Chacellor, Jawaharlal Nehru University as a Member of University Grants Commission (UGC). Prof. Kumar, who earlier worked as a Professor at IIT Delhi said Research and Innovation are the backbone of any developed society. One way to motivate students to get interested in Science is to expose them to research at an early stage in their education. Universities should play a proactive role in strengthening their research programs.
