A large number of students, including girls, donated blood during a blood donation camp organised by the NSS unit of Anbil Dharmalingam Agricultural College and Research Institute of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.

The camp was organised in association with the Blood Bank and State Blood Transfusion Council, Tiruchi. Totally, 52 units of blood was donated on the occasion. The team headed by V. B. Padmanabhan along with 15 associated and doctors from Primary Health Centre, Inamkulathur, were present. The Dean, G. Kathiresan and Staff Advisor, Arulmozhiyan, emphasised the importance of blood donation in saving the precious lives, and precautions to be taken while donating blood.

The Aurora Club of the Department of English organised a session on ‘;Literary forms’ recently. Veeramani, Professor, Department of English, St. Joseph’s College, spoke on the different kinds of literary forms and on how they can enrich their writing. About 60 students benefited by the interactive session.

A two-day training on personality development organised by Aiman College of Arts and Science for Women for the benefit of the first and second year students was addressed by K. Akbar Hussain, Chief Executive, Limra Academy for Excellence.

Mr. Akbar dwelt on the measures students need to take to improve their self and face challenges ahead. He also touched upon communication skills, leadership skills, mental efficiency and attitudinal change. Principal K. Rajab Fathima inaugurated the training programme.

Students of the Department of Mathematics, Chidambaram Pillai College for Women, Mannachanallur, conducted an exhibition recently to demonstrate various experiments on graph theory, topology, trigonometry and operations research.

They explained the applications of Mathematics in Tamil, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History and Geography. College managing trustee A. Loganathan inaugurated the exhibition.

Retired teachers were honoured during the Teachers’ Day celebrations held at National College. Former principal S. Thiagaraj and former vice-principal G. Rengarajan were honoured on the occasion. Both the teachers recalled the various events that happened in the college during their period. They encouraged the teachers to follow the teaching methods adopted by them which they felt helped to instil discipline in the students. They appreciated the management for improving the academic activities and infrastructure on the campus.

Thanga Subramaniam, Income Tax Officer, Tiruchi, an alumnus of the college, felicitated both the teachers.

The secretary of the college, K. Raghunathan, honoured the distinguished teachers and presented wrist watches to them. Principal K. Anbarasu presided.

Joseph Irudhayaraj of the Department of Human Resource Management, St. Joseph’s College, was the chief guest at the Teachers’ Day celebrations held at M. A. M. College of Engineering, Siruganur. He said that Thomas Alva Edision invented the bulb because of the inspiration he got from his teacher during his school days. The great scientist dedicated his invention to his teacher. The principal of the MAM College Engineering, M. A. Maluk Mohamed, said teaching was the most noble profession.

The principal of MAM College of Engineering and Technology, K. Kumar, and the secretary and correspondent of the college, M. A. Mohamed Nizam, offered felicitations.

The first-year classes of MIET Engineering College were inaugurated by S. Gowri, chairman, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Anna University, Tiruchi. He underlined the importance of the reading habit and urged the students to take full advantage of the library facilities available in the college. The chairman of the college, A. Mohamed Yunus, presided. The principal of MIET Engineering College, R. Murugan, and the principal, MIET Polytechnic College, Mathiyazhagan, stressed the importance of hard work and discipline among the students.

The NSS unit of MIET Arts and Science College and the Hindustan Paramedical Institute jointly conducted a blood grouping camp recently. The principal of the college, P. M. Mansure, presided, and the Director of Paramedical Institute, K. Senthilkumar, inaugurated the camp. The chairman of the college, A. Mohamed Yunus, offered felicitations.

The Department of Social Work of Bishop Heber College in collaboration with the SEVAI NGO organised an awareness programme on HIV /AIDS at Bikshandarkoil. S. Sekar, coordinator, Manachanallur block, Sevai, presided. C. Mohana, PLF secretary, and others spoke. Over 150 SHG members participated in the programme.

The first-year B.E./B.Tech classes at Jayaram College of Engineering and Technology were inaugurated by the Registrar of the Anna University, Tiruchi, R. M. Chandrasekaran. Speaking on the occasion, the Registrar said the students should keep in mind the future during their student days. Ramesh Prabha, MD, Galaxy Communications, in his special address, exhorted the students not to get distracted if they wanted to realise their own and their parents’ dreams. Coming from a rural background or from Tamil medium would not be hindrance in scoring high marks, if the students had the right attitude towards studies, he said. The chairman of the college, M. Subramanian, presided. Principal P. Ravikumar offered felicitations.

The first-year classes at Trichy Engineering College were inaugurated by the Syndicate Member of the Bharthidasan University and principal of MIET Arts and Science College, P. M. Mansure. He advised the students to have a single point agenda of completing their studies with flying colours. The youngsters should not allow their attention get diverted from this agenda, he added. The secretary of the college, S. Subramaniam, presided, and the chairperson, Sujatha Subramanian, chief executive, A. Subramanian, and others offered felicitations.

The director of the college, R. C. Janakarajan, explained the various facilities available in the college and called upon the new entrants to take full advantage of the same.

An endowment lecture organised recently by the Department of Computer Science, St. Joseph’s College in the name of the former principal and Rector and current secretary, Rev. Fr. S. John Britto, was addressed by R. Ramanujam, Department of Theoretical Computer Science, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai.

Delivering a lecture on ‘;Distributed Algorithms’, Dr. Ramanujam narrated the improvements in problem-solving techniques with respect to the technological transitions like changes of computing capability from punched card computers to palm-top computers.

The endowment was instituted by former students of Computer Science settled in USA. Principal Rev. Fr. R. Rajarathinam presided. The Rector, Rev. Fr. P. Susai, and the deputy principal, A. Sabastian Anand, offered felicitations.
