Sue Starfield could be a Professor within the School from the practice and Director within the Learning Center. Her research and publications cover tertiary academic literacies, doctorate writing, writing for publication, identity in academic writing, ethnographic research methods and language policy, access and equity in greater education. She was co-editor within the journal, British for particular Purposes (2009-2014) that is co-editor with John Paltridge of two new book series with Routledge: Routledge Introductions to British for particular Purposes and Routledge Research in British for particular Purposes. Her newest publication is Ethnographic Perspectives on Academic Writing (2016, Oxford College Press) co-authored with John Paltridge and Christine Tardy.

Sue was the recipient (with John Paltridge and Louise Ravelli) in the Australian Research Council Discovery Grant 2008-2010 across the subject Writing within the academy: The practice-based thesis just as one evolving genre and co-people receiving an ARC Discovery Grant (2011-2014) with Allyson Holbrook, Sid Bourke and Terry Lovat, College of Newcastle Margaret Kiley, Australian National College and John Paltridge, College of Sydney: A mixture-national study the relative impact in the dental component on PhD examination quality, language and fitness.

She supervises students within the areas of tertiary literacies, advanced academic writing, author identity, research genres, British for particular purposes, access and equity issues for non-native loudspeakers of British in greater education.

Sue’s current research interests include advanced academic writing, postgraduate pedagogy and difficulties with identity in academic writing and learning. With colleagues inside the College of Sydney, Sue and Pam Mort within the Learning Center were awarded a 2006 Carrick Institute Competitive Grant Developing a student-centred online learning atmosphere for report writing within the sciences and engineering .

Sue presently teaches Research Writing and Presentation. a course she’s produced for your school of Arts and Social Sciences. She’s also trained Creating a Research Proposal. a course for commencing postgraduate research students. In addition, she’s connected with program development to enhance students’ effective usage of academic skills inside the college.

Before relocating to Australia, Sue labored more than 15 years in Nigeria, mainly inside the College within the Witwatersrand in Gauteng, where she developed academic programs to promote access and success in greater education for school kids who’d formerly been disadvantaged by apartheid education.
