PhD Program
The philosophy PhD program consists of three phases:
Most students complete these phases in only 5 years. Throughout the final stages from the program, faculty work carefully with students which help them prepare to consider teaching positions in philosophy. See our placement record page for info on where our recent graduates will work.

Foundations Requirement
The next courses should be performed by the finish from the third semester within the program:
- One 400-level logic course
- One 400-level good reputation for ancient philosophy course
- One 400-level good reputation for modern philosophy course
- A minimum of three other 400-level courses
Transfer courses cannot be employed to fulfill the foundations requirement.
Note: Some 400-level courses won’t fulfill the foundation needs. The department will specify every year any courses that don’t satisfy this requirement.
Advanced Coursework
The concentration requirement includes nine additional graduate level courses, including six workshops, and 2 comprehensive examinations within the student’s primary and secondary areas.
Students are needed to inform the department once they select their concentration areas.
- Primary and secondary area needs:
- One 400-level course in epistemology
- One 500-level seminar in epistemology
- Primary and secondary area needs:
- Either two 500-level ethics workshops, a treadmill 400-level course in ethics and something 500-level seminar
Good reputation for Ancient Philosophy
- Primary and secondary area needs:
- Two 500-level workshops in ancient philosophy
Good reputation for Modern Philosophy
- Primary and secondary area needs:
- Two 500-level workshops in modern philosophy
- Primary and secondary area needs:
- One 400-level course in metaphysics
- One 500-level seminar in metaphysics
Philosophy of Language
- Primary and secondary area needs:
- One 400-level course in philosophy of language
- One 500-level seminar in philosophy of language
Philosophy of Mind
- Primary and secondary area needs:
- One 400-level course in philosophy of mind
- One 500-level seminar in philosophy of mind
Philosophy of Science
- Primary area needs:
- PHL 452 and a minimum of one seminar in philosophy of science (students that like el born area must declare a physics or biology section of specialized expertise begin to see the philosophy graduate  handbook to learn more)
- Secondary area needs:
- PHL 452 and a minimum of one seminar in philosophy of science
Students will need to take a test both in their primary and secondary concentration areas. To learn more about these exams, see figures 4 and 5 under advanced needs within the philosophy graduate guide .
Each student is needed to accomplish PHL 560: Writing Seminar. The Writing Seminar might be counted among the six needed workshops although not toward concentration area needs. The Writing Seminar ought to be completed no after the seventh semester of graduate study.
Dissertation Requirement
Throughout their 4th year students will:
- Fulfill the writing seminar requirement by presenting a paper towards the department
- Write a dissertation proposal
- Begin dissertation research underneath the supervision of the thesis committee
Students are anticipated to complete and defend their dissertation throughout their fifth year.
