Abstract

This dissertation handles community development and community action in the area of solid waste management (SWM) in 2 major metropolitan areas, i.e. Dhaka and Chittagong in Bangladesh. The goal of the research ended up being to identify set up community-based SWM initiatives emerged with the influences from the characteristics (or sources) of social capital. Using the objective, it had been assumed that the choice to organise a residential area-based SWM is greater within the neighbourhoods where relatively higher level of social capital exists. The idea of social capital has been utilized because an analytical tool.

Several interesting results emerged in the study for example: (i) it reveals that Putnum’s operationalisation of social capital isn’t fully relevant to a new social and political settings and for that reason have to be contextualised based on the local conditions to be able to reap benefit. It had been discovered that social capital alone isn’t sufficient to create community-based SWM initiative in Bangladesh. It really works well along with the influence of kinship, patron-client relationship, and power and authority relations of Bangladesh society. Therefore, the localities with an advanced of social capital are able to better organise a residential area-based SWM initiative, when the additional factors remain supportive (ii) failure to organise a residential area-based SWM initiative not just signifies the possible lack of sufficient social capital but additionally is because of many contesting factors for example: what the law states and order situation of the nation, power politics, political conflict and threat, which lead with the idea to diminish in order to prevent accumulation of social capital to create collective action possible (iii) a social engagement, organising solid waste collection seems to become just as much according to strong leadership and patron-client relationships than social capital when it comes to social media and trust and (iv) the city-based organisations within the cities of Bangladesh generally function in compliance using the fundamental characteristics from the socio-political system of the nation.
