General Description from the Program:
The Graduate Enter in History at UCI offers students a thrilling intellectual community most clearly based on its dedication to mix-field dialogue among faculty and graduated pupils around shared research interests within the following topics or styles:
- Transnational, colonial, and imperial histories
- World History
- Histories of science, technology, medicine, and also the atmosphere
- A brief history of gender and sexuality
- A brief history of faith
Graduate studying and research workshops promote mix-field dialogue by getting together students from various regions of geographical and temporal expertise to understand a unique method of graduate study. This method combines rigorous theoretical study using the careful study of documents, texts, interviews, and material evidence.

The UCI History Department is sufficiently small to provide close focus on students’ specific needs but big enough to operate being an active research community. Students may make use of the Department’s active focus on and learning writing for multiple publics its programs ever pedagogy and connected K-12 outreach program, the UC Irvine History Project and also the department’s growing knowledge of digital humanities. Students will also be asked to broaden their horizons by taking part in interdisciplinary emphases provided by different programs and departments around the UCI campus in Critical Theory, East Asian Studies, and Gender and Sexuality Studies.
The relatively small size the graduate program enables for close collaboration between students and school, allowing us to tailor individual programs of study to satisfy the student’s interests and goals.
The Department hosts the Journal of Asian Studies.
Students and school also take advantage of the closeness of major research collections, such as the Huntington Library, The Getty Museum and Research Institute, The Clark Library, The Nation’s Archives and Records depository in Laguna Beach, the Nixon Presidential Library, and UCI Special Collections that has significant holdings within the Southeast Asian Archive, the Critical Theory Archive, and Oc and California history.
All entering Ph.D. students receive five-year fellowship support packages, including a minimum of 75 % of TAships.
Needs for Ph.D. Degree:
PhD students take 15 courses spread across 6 quarters throughout their first couple of many years of study, together with a two-quarter sequence ever and Theory, a 2-quarter newbie research seminar, a 2-quarter second-year research seminar, and specialized courses within their particular research fields.
