The Results of Network-Centric Warfare on Micromanagement, Centralized Control, and Decentralized Execution in Combat

As technology increases in combat, different players in combat are linked, flattening the standard military command structure. This creates new challenges affecting the choice making process potentially growing micromanagement from senior leaders and challenges the environment Pressure doctrinal tenet of “centralized control and decentralized execution”. Leavitt and Whistler presented their theory that technology will centralize organizations and take away or reduce mid-level management. Gregory’s theory X highlighted the traits of micromanagers. 28 Active Duty Air Pressure Airmen who fly, fight and win using network-centric warfare (NCW) technology in combat were interviewed within this qualitative ethnographic study. The main styles uncovered with this study are NCW technologies are indeed altering the form from the military hierarchical structure, subordinates believe senior leaders should get access to NCW technology however for awareness only, senior leaders need additional training to guide in NCW environments and NCW increases micromanagement. Findings are combat aircraft missing current technology will have lesser roles in combat, senior leadership should stick to strict checklists before you make real-time tactical level decision, professional military education curriculums will include combat in NCW environments and leaders need immediate feedback from subordinates if micromanagement traits are now being displayed.
