The writing of Dr. Seuss is currently inspiring student writers to try new techniques with the traits of idea development and word choice. Join us in teaching (and adapting) this on-line lesson and sharing your students’ work.

Use these samples to inspire your student writers! Discussing the strengths of published student samples before, while, and after using this on-line assignment is important. If your students are engaged in trait- or skill-inspired discussions about any of the samples we’ve posted here, they will produce better writing, especially if you help them take their writing all the way through the writing process.

On my blue days, I feel happy
because my mom came home.

On my hazel days, I feel freaked out
like a monkey climbing a tree.

On my green days, I feel crazy

On quiet brown days,
I’m hibernating like a bear in
Winter in his cave.

On cold blue days,
I’m cold like a polar bear.

Yellow makes me feel like I’m making sand castles in Hawaii or I’m doing chores on a hot summer day or a big sun in the sky.

Red makes me feel like a big red hot heart and love’s nearby and blood gushing through veins.

Black makes me feel like I’m sad and angry and I’m down in a deep, deep dark hole and not even knowing who I am.

White makes me feel like I have no memory what so ever and there’s nothing in the world anymore and it’s just clear nothing else left.

Green makes me feel like it’s spring and there’s flowers all over and leaves on a tree up, up in the spring sky.

Pink makes me feel like roses and odd colored butterflies and cheeks of a powder soft skin baby.

Orange makes me feel like the middle of a flower and a sunset setting on the horizon.

Student Samples: Upper Elementary

On pink days,
I am happy like a flamingo
swimming in the nice warm pond.

On orange days,
I am smelling like a pumpkin
glowing on a dark autumn evening.

On blue days,
I’m careless like a bird in
the jungle on a warm day.

On my gray days,
I’m a sad cloud in the sky
sleeping on a winter day.

On red days,
I’m like a big fire in the dark
that was made by lightning.

On my sapphire day,
I’m brown and mellow,
and I just want to lie on my pillow.

I’m a restless sky blue rainbow.
I mosey where there’s mysteries.

As the ruby day fades to dingo,
the summer’s ocean turns to sapphire.
I lie on the peaceful sparkling ocean sand and rest.

On my yellow days I’m filled with joy and excitement.
I leap from the couch and run outside.
I fall asleep under the warm sun.
All is peaceful.

On my black days I’m angry.
I roar with hatred as I thwomp through the doorframe.
Then my day clears up as school ends.
I’m a dog filled with happiness.

On my gray days I’m emotionless.
I wait for something very interesting to happen.
If something does happen, I’m a curious little bug.
If not, I slip back into the gray.

On burgundy days, I am enraged
like a graceful lion
roaring, fiercely through fire
on a misty, summer’s eve.

On violet weeks, I am curious
like a delicate kitten
wandering by the enchanted woods
during the rise of the moon.

On yellow months I am cheerful
like a encouraged robin
seeking slimy worms
at the time of morn.

For every new day,
There’s a new feeling.
For every new feeling,
There’s a new color.

On a neon green day I’m excited or surprised,
Like a grasshopper jumping through the grass
On a moderately warm spring day.

On an orange day I’m happy,
Like a jack-o-lantern glowing in the dark
On a starry dark fall night.

On a lavender day I’m relaxed,
Like a flower rustling in the spring breeze
On a cool summer morning.

On a white day I’m confused about what I feel,
Like a cloud changing colors as a storm blows through
On a dreary mid-afternoon.

On a brown day I’m sad,
Like an abused dog whining for affection
On a stormy fall night.

Although there are many emotions,
A certain color is a new feeling.
