Implicit Thesis.
Our Thesis: Proper communication skills are vital for conveying thoughts, emotions, and ideas otherwise one might be perceived wrongfully.
Rhetorical Triangle
Tan uses all three of Aristotle’s rhetorical styles (ethos, logos, and pathos) in her essay “Mother Tongue.” First of all, she uses ethos in the first couple of paragraphs to establish her identity as a writer. For example, she says “I am not a scholar of English or literature…..I am a writer” to earn the readers’ respect. Tan also uses logos, or logic and reasoning. A good example of this is when Tan explains how her mother would have her call and complain to people or ask for information over the phone. Tan mostly uses pathos in her essay to appeal to readers’ emotions. An example of her pathos style is when she informs the reader about her mother’s tumor: ”…the hospital did not apologize when they said they had lost the CT scan……they did not seem to have any sympathy when she told them she was anxious to know the exact diagnosis…”
Amy Tan significantly balances each part of the rhetorical triangle as each element of the rhetorical triangle ultimately led to creating a very effective and thought provoking essay

Methods of Proof

2: The essay would emotionally appeal to and draw in people who can relate to having to deal with broken English. Helps to draw in readers who can relate and get them to keep reading the essay.

We can apply the morals taught in this essay in our everyday lives. Tan expresses how easy it is to judge others based on how they communicate with us, and this relates back to our thesis which explains how if one has weak communication skills, they will be perceived wrongfully by others. Which is what Tan is trying to prove.
Tan uses great vocabulary, and sentence structure which helps the reader understand what she is trying to say. At the same time, she allows the reader to make up their own opinions and thoughts on the issue.
